GPR survey of a major airport runway
The objective of this study was to demonstrate the usefulness of the GPR technique for measuring pavement thickness. This demonstration was done through a brief description of an evaluation and overlay study carried out recently for a major runway in Israel. The evaluation study made it possible to show that GPR had the capacity to detect thickness variations which would not otherwise be revealed. These variations produced errors of up to 7.0 cm of over-estimated asphalt thickness for the entire runway length, when compared to the conventional procedure of overlay design.
