CALIFORNIA EXPLORES METHODS OF FIGHTING CONTINUING PROBLEM OF WRONG-WAY DRIVING

A 5-POINT PROGRAM FOR PREVENTING WRONG-WAY DRIVING WAS INITIATED BY THE CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS AFTER 53 PEOPLE DIED IN WRONG-WAY ACCIDENTS ON THE STATE'S FREEWAY SYSTEM IN 1970. POINT 1 WAS TO REEXAMINE THE PAST 9 YEARS OF RESEARCH ON THE PROBLEM, INCLUDING DEVICES USED TO PREVENT IT: PAVEMENT BUMPS, WARNING SIGNS, ETC. POINT 2 CALLED FOR THE REVIEW OF RESEARCH DONE BY OTHER STATES. POINT 3 WAS TO IDENTIFY LOCATIONS WHERE WRONG-WAY MOVEMENTS ARE OCCURRING AND WHO IS MAKING THEM. FIELD INVESTIGATIONS OF FREEWAY RAMPS WERE MADE UNDER POINT 4 TO FIND THE OPTIMUM SIGNING AND PLACEMENT OF SIGNS AND GUIDE MARKERS IN THE VICINITY OF RAMP TERMINALS. POINT 5 WILL BE CONTINUED CAMERA SURVEILLANCE OF OFF-RAMPS TO DETECT WRONG-WAY.
