HIGHWAY SIGN STUDIES - VIRGINIA 1960
THE VIRGINIA COUNCIL OF HIGHWAY INVESTIGATION AND RESEARCH HAS BEEN ENGAGED FOR MANY YEARS IN A CONTINUING RESEARCH PROGRAM CONCERNING HIGHWAY SIGN CHARACTERISTICS. TWO STUDIES WERE COMPLETED IN 1960. THE FIRST WAS DEVELOPED TO COMPARE THE LEGIBILITY OF TWO SIGNS HAVING DIFFERENT COLOR COMBINATIONS BUT THE SAME LETTER SIZE AND SERIES. OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE BY 24 SUBJECTS BOTH DURING THE DAY AND AT NIGHT WITH AUTOMOBILE HEADLAMP ILLUMINATION. THE SIGNS WERE PLACED TO SIMULATE A RURAL SITUATION ON THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM. THE SECOND STUDY INVESTIGATED THE VISIBILITY OF VARIOUS DESIGNS FOR DIAGONALLY STRIPED SIGNS WHICH ARE USED AS HAZARD WARNING MARKERS ON VIRGINIA HIGHWAYS. THREE STRIPE WIDTHS, THREE OVER-ALL SIZES, AND THREE COLOR COMBINATIONS WERE COMPARED BY 10 OBSERVERS BOTH AT DAY AND AT NIGHT. IN BOTH STUDIES THE USE OF STATISTICAL METHODS FACILITATED THE ANALYSIS. THE TEST DESIGNS, METHODS, AND ANALYSES ARE DESCRIBED FOR BOTH STUDIES. /AUTHOR/
