A STUDY OF INGRESS AND EGRESS AT GASOLINE SERVICE STATIONS ON RURAL STATE HIGHWAYS WITHOUT CONTROL OF ACCESS
THE PROBLEM OF CONTROL OF ENTRANCES AND EXITS AT COMMERCIAL ROADSIDE ESTABLISHMENTS, ESPECIALLY AT GASOLINE SERVICE STATIONS, IS RECEIVING NATIONAL RECOGNITION. THE FREQUENCY AND DESIGN OF THESE ACCESS POINTS ARE TWO IMPORTANT PHYSICAL ELEMENTS AFFECTING THE SAFE AND EFFICIENT OPERATION OF VEHICLES UPON OUR HIGHWAYS. UNCONTROLLED DRIVEWAY APPROACHES SERIOUSLY REDUCE THE CAPACITY OF HIGHWAYS AND CREATE CONDITIONS CONDUCIVE TO HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS. THE FEATURES OF THE DRIVER BEHAVIOR OF MOTORISTS ENTERING AND LEAVING GASOLINE SERVICE STATIONS WERE FACTUALLY INVESTIGATED AND RELATED TO THE BEST METHOD OF CONTROLLING THE LOCATION AND DESIGN OF THE ACCESS DRIVEWAYS. THE NEW YORK STATE PETROLEUM INDUSTRIES COMMITTEE COOPERATED IN THE PLANNING OF THE STUDY AND IN THE COLLECTION OF FIELD DATA. THE DRIVER BEHAVIOR STUDIES WERE CONDUCTED IN THREE PHASES CONSIDERING THE FOLLOWING RELATED FACTORS: (A) SPEEDS OF VEHICLES ON THE HIGHWAY AND ENTERING THE STATION; (B) TRAVEL PATHS OF VEHICLES ENTERING, LEAVING, AND WITHIN THE STATION; (C) HIGHWAY AND STATION TRAFFIC VOLUMES; (D) VEHICLE PLACEMENT; (E) INTERFERENCE OR CONFLICT AT THE STATION; (F) DRIVER INTERVIEW TO DETERMINE PREFERENCES; AND (G) ACCIDENT PATTERN AT SERVICE STATIONS. /AUTHOR/
