THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES BRIEFLY HOW AN INDUCTANCE LOOP DETECTOR FOR VEHICLE TRAFFIC COUNTING WORKS. THE ADVANTAGES OF INSTALLING LOOP DETECTORS FOR PERMANENT VEHICLE TRAFFIC COUNTING POINTS ARE DISCUSSED AND AN ESTIMATE OF THE COST OF COUNTING BY THIS METHOD IS COMPARED WITH PNEUMATIC TUBE DECTECTORS. WORK TO ESTABLISH THE DIMENSIONS OF LOOP LAYOUTS PRODUCING THE MOST ACCURATE COUNTS AND TO TEST VARIOUS METHODS OF INSERTING THE LOOPS INTO THE CARRIAGEWAY SURFACING IS ALSO DESCRBIED. /AUTHOR/
