THE EFFECTS OF COCHANNEL INTERFERENCE ON THE PARAMETERS OF A SMALL-CELL MOBILE TELEPHONE SYSTEM

IN A SMALL-CELL MOBILE TELEPHONE SYSTEM, EACH CHANNEL MAY BE USED SIMULTANEOUSLY IN CELLS SPACED SUFFICIENTLY APART TO LIMIT COCHANNEL INTERFERENCE. THE EXTENT OF THE INTERFERENCE DEPENDS UPON THE DISTANCE BETWEEN COCHANNEL CELLS, THE NUMBER OF LAND STATIONS PER CELL, AND THE RECEIVER CAPTURE RATIO. THE QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THESE PARAMETERS ARE DERIVED FOR VARIOUS CELL CONFIGURATIONS. IT APPEARS THAT A SATISFACTORILY LOW LEVEL OF COCHANNEL INTERFERENCE MAY BE ACHIEVED WITH A REASONABLE NUMBER OF CHANNEL SETS AND VALUE OF RECEIVER CAPTURE RATIO. THE MOST STRAIGHTFORWARD LAYOUTS EMPLOY EITHER SQUARE OR HEXAGONAL CELLS, WITH A SINGLE LAND STATION AT THE CENTER OF EACH CELL. A 1-PERCENT PROBABILITY OF COCHANNEL INTERFERENCE MAY BE ACHIEVED WITH SUCH A SQUARE CELL LAYOUT USING 9, 16, OR 25 SETS OF CHANNELS WITH A RECEIVER CAPTURE RATIO OF 8, 14, OR 18.5 DB, RESPECTIVELY. THE HEXAGONAL CELLS PROVIDE MORE FREEDOM IN DESIGN SINCE SYSTEMS MAY BE PROVIDED WITH 9, 12, 13, 16, 19, 21, OR 25 SETS OF CHANNELS, REQUIRING SOMEWHAT LOWER RECEIVER CAPTURE RATIOS. BOTH APPEAR TO BE CANDIDATES FOR SYSTEM DESIGN SINCE THE REQUIRED PARAMETER VALUES ARE REASONABLE. THE TECHNIQUE OF DIVIDING EACH CELL INTO SUBCELLS PROVIDES A MEANS OF RELAXING THE REQUIREMENT ON THE RECEIVER CAPTURE RATIO. /AUTHOR/
