VEHICLE LOCATION BY A SIGNAL ATTENUATION METHOD

A SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED FOR A VEHICLE LOCATION SCHEME IN WHICH A SIGNAL FROM THE MOBILE TRANSMITTER IS ANALYZED ON A STATISTICAL BASIS. THE ACCURACY OF THE SYSTEM DEPENDS ON THE SPACING OF THE STATION RECEIVERS: FOR A SPACING DISTANCE OF 1.5 MILES, AN ACCURACY OF 1000 FEET (TWO CITY BLOCKS) SEEMS FEASIBLE. THE SPEED OF THE SYSTEM MAY BE LIMITED BY THE TIME IT TAKES FOR THE COMPUTER TO FIND THE MOST PROBABLE LOCATION. A WORKING SYSTEM WOULD REQUIRE AN INTERFACE BETWEEN THE SAMPLER AND THE COMPUTER. THIS INTERFACE WOULD TRANSFER DATA FROM EACH SAMPLE DIRECTLY TO THE COMPUTER, THEREBY ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR ANY MECHANICAL READOUT. ALL THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS REPORT ARE FOR A MOVING VEHICLE TRAVELING AT 20 MPH. A VEHICLE AT REST OR TRAVELING SLOWER THAN 20 MPH. WILL INTRODUCE ADDITIONAL ERROR, WHILE A VEHICLE TRAVELING AT A HIGHER SPEED WILL NOT INCREASE ERROR. /AUTHOR/
