TOLL COLLECTION-EQUIPMENT AND METHODS
THE TRIBOROUGH BRIDGE AND TUNNEL AUTHORITY OPERATES SEVEN BRIDGES AND TWO TUNNELS, ALL WITHIN THE CITY OF NEW YORK. ALL OF THE TOLL RECORDING EQUIPMENT IN USE IS MORE OR LESS CONVENTIONAL ELECTRO-MECHANICAL, ENGRAVED WHEEL, RIBBON AND PAPER, HARD COPY PRINTED READ OUT EQUIPMENT. SOME MODIFICATION IS BEING MADE IN THE EQUIPMENT BEING INSTALLED AT THE TRIBOROUGH BRIDGE WHERE TOLL PLAZAS ARE BEING RECONSTRUCTED. THE MAJOR CHANGE IN LANE EQUIPMENT IS IN AUTOMATIC TOLL COLLECTION EQUIPMENT. PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE MOSTLY IN THE METHOD OF PROCESSING INFORMATION ON THE PRINTED TAPES. AT PRESENT, FACILITIES INFORMATION FROM THE REGISTER TAPES IS MANUALLY KEY PUNCHED AND THE CARDS PROCESSED BY THE COMPUTER. IN THE MOST RECENT INSTALLATION DATA ARE ACCUMULATED IN THE LANE RECORDERS AND PUNCHED OUT ON PAPER TAPE AND CONVERTED TO CARDS MECHANICALLY. THE ADVANTAGES ARE RECOGNIZED OF AUTOMATIC TOLL COLLECTION MACHINES, ALTHOUGH THEIR USE IS LIMITED TO EXACT CHANGE PASSENGER VEHICLES.
