CHARLESTON'S COMPUTERISED TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM

THE CITY OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA HAS PLACED AN ORDER FOR A "... COMPLETELY INTEGRATED AND TRAFFIC-RESPONSIVE MODULAR SOLID STATE SYSTEM ..." WHICH WILL INITIALLY CONTROL 90 VITAL INTERSECTIONS AND WILL BE VIRTUALLY A TURNKEY PROJECT. THE SYSTEM IS SUPPOSED TO INCREASE RUSH-HOUR VOLUME BY 25%-30% AND CAR SPEEDS BY 10-20 MPH. THIS IS A CLOSED- LOOP SYSTEM: AFTER A CORRECTION IS MADE TO SIGNAL TIMING, THE TRAFFIC IS MONITORED AND COMPARED TO THE EXPECTED IMPROVEMENT. IF THIS IMPROVEMENT DOES NOT TAKE PLACE, THEN MODIFICATIONS WILL BE MADE TO THE SIGNAL TIMING. THERE WILL BE 23 LOOP DETECTORS FOR SAMPLING AND 60 FOR SURVEILLANCE. THE MAIN COMPUTER IS ANALOG; A DIGITAL COMPUTER IS USED FOR THE SURVEILLANCE. MANY OTHER FEATURES ASSURE AN OPTIMUM SYSTEM. /BPR/
