PREDICTION OF SIGNAL 'PHANTOM' FROM LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS

IT IS SHOWN THAT 'PHANTOM' INTENSITIES IN TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNALS CAN BE SUCCESSFULLY PREDICTED FORM LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS. AN ARTIFICIAL 'SUN' IS USED TO ILLUMINATE THE SIGNAL HEAD AND THE INTENSITY RATIO OF COLORED TO WHITE SUN PHANTOM IS MEASURED. THE WHITE PHANTOM FOUND IN PRACTICE CAN BE CALCULATED FROM THE KNOWN LUMINANCE OF THE SUN AND FROM THE SIGNAL REFRACTOR GEOMETRY, SO THAT THE COLORED PHANTOM INTENSITY CAN THEN BE CALCULATED. ACTUAL PEAK PHANTOM INTENSITIES ARE COMPARABLE WITH THE INTENSITIES OF GENUINE SIGNAL INDICATIONS IN PRACTICE, AND SOME COMMENTS ARE MADE ON METHODS FOR THE CONTROL OF SIGNAL PHANTOM. /AUTHOR/
