ELECTRONIC PASSING-AID SYSTEM TO BE TESTED IN MAINE
BIDS WERE OPENED LAST JULY BY THE MAINE STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION FOR THE FIRST CONTRACT IN THE INSTALLATION OF A UNIQUE EXPERIMENTAL ELECTRONIC PASSING-AID SYSTEM (PAS) TO EXTEND ALONG A 15-MILE SECTION OF U. S. ROUTE 2 BETWEEN CANAAN AND NEWPORT. THE SYSTEM IS INTENDED TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR A MOTORIST TO PASS ANOTHER, SLOWER VEHICLE SAFELY, EVEN ON A CURVE OR HILL, WHERE VISIBILITY IS LIMITED. THE COMPLETED SYSTEM WILL CONSIST OF A SERIES OF WIRE LOOPS BURIED IN THE HIGHWAY PAVEMENT. THE LOOPS ARE CONNECTED TO DETECTING DEVICES AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND THESE WILL BE CONNECTED BY CABLE TO A NEARBY COMPUTER. AN ELECTRONIC VISUAL DISPLAY DEVICE WILL FEED BACK INFORMATION TO THE MOTORIST. THE DEVICE WILL INDICATE TO HIM THE TIME IN SECONDS IT WILL TAKE THE NEAREST APPROACHING VEHICLE TO REACH HIM. THIS FIRST CONTRACT CALLS FOR THE INITIAL INSTALLATION OF WIRE LOOPS AT 200-FT. INTERVALS ALONG THE HIGHWAY. IT ALSO INCLUDES THE REPLACEMENT OF CABLE IN THE SHOULDERS AND CONNECTION OF THE ENTIRE NETWORK OF LOOPS WITH THE CABLES. A SECOND CONTRACT SHOULD BE AWARDED IN THE SPRING OF 1970 TO CONNECT THE NETWORK OF LOOPS AND CABLE TO A COMPUTER. THE SYSTEM SHOULD REDUCE THE NEED FOR CLIMBING AND PASSING LANES, AND PROVIDE GREATER SAFETY TO THE PASSING MOTORISTS.
