VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS OF NATIONS HIGHWAYS ARE EVALUATED

RESEARCH SPONSORED BY THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS IS BEING CONDUCTED BY THE TEXAS TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE, TO DIAGNOSTICALLY STUDY PRESENT VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS OF THE ROADWAY. THE FINDINGS WILL IMPROVE FOR THE MOTORIST ESSENTIAL FEATURES OF THE HIGHWAY ENVIRONMENT AS: (1) SIGNING, (2) SHOULDER DELINEATING, (3) MARKING, AND (4) ILLUMINATING. DIAGNOSTIC TEAMS OF RESEARCHERS, TECHNOLOGISTS AND OFFICIALS OF HIGHWAY AGENCIES, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, AND LAYMEN EVALUATE DATA OBTAINED FROM DRIVERS TRAVELLIING SPECIFIED ROUTES. THE CONVERSATIONS ARE TAPED AND THE DRIVERS ARE INTERVIEWED ON THE TRIP SO THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC TEAM CAN DETERMINE WHAT REQUIRES IMPROVEMENT IN THE VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS OF THE PARTICULAR ROUTE. EIGHTEEN STATES ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE STUDY. ADEQUATE DESIGN STANDARDS FOR THE VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM OF ROADWAYS ARE NEEDED AND IT IS HOPED THAT THIS STUDY WILL HELP PRODUCE THESE STANDARDS.
