COMPUTERIZED TRAFFIC CONTROL FOR CORRIDOR OPERATION OF A DALLAS EXPRESSWAY
THE DALLAS CORRIDOR STUDY WAS SUPPORTED BY THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS TO: (1) DETERMINE THE FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR OPTIMUM FREEWAY CORRIDOR CONTROL (2) DEVELOP THE SYSTEM DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS FOR CORRIDOR SURVEILLANCE AND CONTROL, AND (3) DEVELOP CONTROL LOGIC AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR INTEGRATING LOCAL RAMP MERGING CONTROL, LOCAL STREET INTERSECTION CONTROL, AND SELECTED FREEWAY AND SURFACE STREET INPUTS INTO OVERALL ADAPTIVE CONTROL BY CENTRALIZED DIGITAL COMPUTER. THE DALLAS CORRIDOR STUDY IS NOW ENTERING THE SECOND YEAR OF A THREE-YEAR CONTRACT. A SURVEILLANCE AND CONTROL SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED FOR THE DALLAS NORTH CENTRAL EXPRESSWAY IN THE STUDY AREA. THE GAP ACCEPTANCE CONCEPT IS THE BASIC PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF THE FREEWAY CONTROL SYSTEM. GAP ACCEPTANCE IS ACHIEVED BY A CONTROLLER WHICH MEASURES SPEEDS AND GAPS IN THE OUTSIDE FREEWAY LANE. THE FUNCTION OF THE CONTROLLER IS HANDLED BY A CENTRAL DIGITAL COMPUTER WHICH RECEIVES AND PROCESSES INPUT DATA FROM VEHICLE DETECTORS BURIED IN THE PAVEMENT AND TRANSMITS COMMANDS TO THE TRAFFIC SIGNALS. AN IBM 1800 PROCESS CONTROL COMPUTER PERFORMS THESE FUNCTIONS AS WELL AS HANDLING DATA ANALYSES ON A TIME SHARING BASIS. THE COMPUTER OPERATES THE ENTRANCE RAMP SIGNAL VIA THE DATA TRANSMISSION SUBSYSTEM. THE SUBSYSTEM BRINGS DATA INPUTS FROM 9 DETECTOR ACTUATIONS AND ONE GREEN CONFIRM SIGNAL FOR A TYPICAL RAMP TO THE CENTRAL COMPUTER AND SENDS TWO OUTPUTS FROM THE COMPUTER (BINARY CODE) TO THE RAMP SIGNAL. THE TRANSMITTING AND RECEIVING OF BINARY DATA AND BINARY COMMANDS IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH THE USE OF AUDIO TONE TRANSMITTERS AND RECEIVERS. ALTERNATIVES CONSIDERED FOR DATA TRANSMISSION IN THE PILOT STUDY ARE DESCRIBED. A ONE-CAMERA, CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION SYSTEM WAS PURCHASED TO BE INSTALLED ON TOP OF THE 10-STORY NOEL PAGE BUILDING, WHERE THE CONTROL CENTER OFFICES ARE LOCATED. SPECIFICATIONS FOR AN EIGHT-CAMERA PORTABLE TELEVISION SYSTEM WERE COMPLETED.
