SOUTHAMPTON'S BITTERNE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEME IS DESIGNED TO GIVE PRIORITY TO BUSES
A NEW TYPE OF BUS PRIORITY SCHEME, TO BE INTRODUCED IN SOUTHAMPTON, IS AIMED AT REDUCING BUS JOURNEY TIMES AND IMPROVING REGULARITY DURING PEAK HOURS. THE SCHEME IS DESIGNED TO CONTROL THE INGRESS OF PRIVATE VEHICLES TO A LEVEL WHICH THE MAIN ROAD CAN MANAGE; THIS INGRESS IS TO BE ALLOWED AT SELECTED POINTS ONLY. BUSES WILL BE ALLOWED TO JOIN THE MAIN STREAM AT OTHER POINTS AND WILL THEREFORE GAIN PRECEDENCE OVER OTHER ROAD USERS WHEN DEMAND ON THE ROUTE EXCEEDS CAPACITY. THE PLAN IS ENVOLVED AROUND A SYSTEM OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL INSTALLATIONS WHICH WILL ALLOW THE MOST SUITABLE PROGRESSION ALONG THE MAIN ROUTE ACCORDING TO THE PREVAILING TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. /RRL/
