STUDYING THE PARKING MIX THROUGH THE USE OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE FACILITIES AND DISCUSSION

AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO DETERMINA A RESONABLE PARKING MIX THROUGH THE USE OF TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES THAT ARE WELL KNOWN BY TRAFFIC ENGINEERS. SOME OF THE BASIC DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SMALL AND LARGE CITY STRUCTURE THAT MADE DATA ANALYSIS DIFFICULT ARE' /1/ GREATER DEPENDENCE ON THE AUTOMOBILE BY THE SMALL CITY RESIDENT, /2/ LACK OF MASS TRANSIT FACILITIES, /3/ THE DISTINCT NATURE OF THE SMALL CITY CBD, /4/ THE ATTITUDE OF THE SMALL CITY MERCHANT TOWARD PARKING, AND /5/ FINANCING PARKING IMPROVEMENTS. THE STUDENTS SURVEY SHOWED THAT THESE DIFFERENCES MUST BE CONSIDERED. CENSUS STATISTICS PROVIDE A RELATIVELY QUICK, INEXPENSIVE MEANS OF COMPARING A CITYS GROSS PARKING SUPPLY WITH THAT FOUND IN SIMILAR CITIES. WALKING DISTANCES TO DESTINATIONS VARY ACCORDING TO SEX, GROUP, PLACE OF RESIDENCE, AND PURPOSE OF THE TRIP BY VARIOUS PARKERS. THE GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGINS OF SHOPPERS IN VARIOUS PARKING LOTS MAY BE STUDIED TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF THE DRAWING POWER OF THE CBD IN RELATION TO SUBURBAN SHOPPING FACILITIES. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT COLLEGES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY ARE AN EXCELLENT SOURCE FROM WHICH PARKING STUDIES MAY BE ORIGINATED.
