CURB PARKING SIGN STUDY

POSSIBLE CHANGES IN THE SIGNING OF CURB REGULATIONS ARE BEING EXAMINED TO DEVELOP A SIMPLIFIED, MORE EFFICIENT AND ATTRACTIVE PARKING SIGN. ON THE BASIS OF THE SIGN STUDIES AND BASIC SIGN PRINCIPLES DEVELOPED DURING THIS STUDY, THE FOLLOWING PARKING SIGN DESIGN AND RELATED ITEMS FOR IMPLEMENTATION IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ARE RECOMMENDED' /1/ THE SIGN SHOULD HAVE A DISTINCT DIFFERENCE TO INDICATE EACH TYPE OF REGULATION AND THE CONFUSING HORIZONTAL CROSSBARS SEPARATING RESTRICTIONS AND TIME LIMITS SHOULD BE ELIMINATED. /2/ THE MESSAGE TOW AWAY ZONE SHOULD BE ELIMINATED FROM THE SIGN. /3/ THE HOURS GOVERNING REGULATIONS SHOULD GENERALLY BE LISTED IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER FROM THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SIGN ACCORDING TO THE TIME OF DAY. /4/ ON MULTIPLE MESSAGE SIGNS, REDUNDANT MESSAGES SUCH AS ENTRANCE AND LOADING ZONES SHOULD BE ELIMINATED FROM THE SIGN LEGEND AND THE MESSAGE SHOULD USE A MINIMUM OF LETTERS AND NUMBERS. /5/ THE MAXIMUM SIZE OF THE SIGN PLATE SHOULD BE 12 BY 36 IN. AND WHERE PARKING METERS ARE IN PLACE, THE TIME LIMIT RESTRICTION MESSAGE CAN BE AFFIXED DIRECTLY TO THE METER IN LIEU OF PLACEMENT OF THE SIGN. /6/ THE PRESENT PLACEMENT OF PARKING SIGN POSTS IN THE FIELD WILL BE REVIEWED IN DETAIL IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A MORE CONSISTENT PLACEMENT POLICY. /7/ A MORE SUBSTANTIAL TYPE OF SQUARE SIGN POST SHOULD BE USED TO SUPPORT THE SIGN PLATE, PARTICULARLY ON MONUMENTAL STREETS AND AVENUES. /8/ THE EXISTING CONFUSION BETWEEN PARKING AND STANDING MUST BE ELIMINATED. /9/ TO REDUCE THE NUMBER AND COMPLEXITY OF MESSAGES USED ON PARKING SIGNS, A DETAILED REVIEW AND REVISION OF THE PARKING AND STANDING REGULATIONS IS NECESSARY.
