LIGHTING COLOR STANDARDS GET NEW DAY-NIGHT REVIEW
A SERIES OF OUTDOOR DAY-NIGHT TESTS WERE CONDUCTED BY THE NATIONAL BUREAU OF STANDARDS TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE SAE LIGHTING COMMITTEE SHOULD RE-EXAMINE ITS STANDARDS ON AUTOMOTIVE SIGNAL LIGHT COLORS. THE TESTS ALSO OPENED THE POSSIBLITY OF SAE LIGHTING COLOR STANDARDS FOR BLUE AND GREEN AS EMERGENCY VEHICLE SIGNALLING COLORS. A THIRD GOAL WAS TO CONSIDER A TEST METHOD FOR EVALUATING CERTAIN SIGNAL DEVICES WHOSE APPARENT COLOR VARIES WITH THE DIRECTION OF VIEW. IT WAS NOTED THAT THE YELLOW-RED TESTS WERE A FIRST EXPOSURE TO THE STANDARDS DIFFERENCES, WHILE THE BLUE-GREEN TESTS WERE AIMED MORE AT POSSIBLE QUANTIFYING AND LIMITING THEIR CHROMATIC CHARACTERISTICS FOR USE AS VEHICLE SIGNAL LIGHTS.
