DRIVER RESPONSE TO RADAR BRAKES

A "BLACK-BOX" SYSTEM DEFINITION IS MADE FOR AN AUTOMATIC BRAKING-CONTROL SYSTEM THAT EMPLOYS RADAR AS THE FOREIGN- OBJECT DETECTOR AND BRAKE-SYSTEM ACTUATOR. INPUT, ANALYSIS (COMPUTER CALCULATIONS), AND OUTPUT ARE DESCRIBED, AND A SIX-POINT SPECIFICATION IS NOTED. A TEST CAR WAS MANUFACTURED AND WAS DRIVEN BY 10 PERSONS WHOSE RESPONSES TO A QUESTIONNAIRE ARE SUMMARIZED. A GENERAL CONCLUSION WAS THAT THE SYSTEM COMPLICATED INSTEAD OF SIMPLIFIED DRIVER DECISION-MAKING.
