VEHICLE OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS ON THE WEST VIRGINIA TURNPIKE AND ALTERNATE ROUTES
THE ECONOMICS OF VEHICLE OPERATION, AS MEASURED FUEL CONSUMPTION, SPEED AND BRAKING, SPEED GROUPS, AND TRAVEL TIME, WAS MEASURED FOR TRAVEL BETWEEN CHARLESTON AND PRINCETON, W. VIRGINIA BEFORE AND AFTER THE OPENING OF THE TURNPIKE ALONG THIS ROUTE. FOR THE CAR STUDY, THE LARGE SAVINGS IN MILEAGE RESULTED IN A NET REDUCTION OF FUEL CONSUMPTION, EVEN THOUGH FUEL CONSUMPTION RATE WAS HIGHER ON THE TURNPIKE, FOR DESIGN SPEEDS. ON THE TWO PARALLEL ROUTES TO THE TURNPIKE, THERE WAS NO CHANGE IN FUEL CONSUMPTION OR TRIP TIME WITH THE OPENING OF THE TURNPIKE. FOR THE TRUCK STUDY, TRAVEL TIME AND TOTAL FUEL CONSUMPTION WERE ALSO LESS THAN FOR THE PARALLEL ROUTES.
