THE EFFECT ON DRIVER BEHAVIOR ON CENTER LINES ON TWO-LANE ROADS
MOTOR VEHICLE SPEEDS AND TRANSVERSE POSITIONS ARE SUBSTANTIALLY AFFECTED BY PAVEMENT MARKINGS ALONG THE ROADWAY CENTER LINE. THE TYPICAL VEHICLE PATH IS FARTHER TO THE RIGHT ON PAVEMENTS WITH A CENTER LINE THAN ON SIMILAR PAVEMENTS WITHOUT SUCH MARKING. IN GENERAL, SPEEDS HIGHER BY ABOUT 4 MPH EXIST ON PAVEMENTS WITHOUT CENTER MARKINGS THAN ON THOSE WITH MARKINGS. /AUTHOR/
