A TYPOLOGY OF ACCIDENT PRONENESS

THE CONCEPT OF ACCIDENT-PRONENESS HAS FALLEN INTO DISREPUTE BECAUSE IT CANNOT BE DEMONSTRATED STATISTICALLY AS AN ENDURING TRAIT, IN LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE. HOWEVER, CLINICAL EXPERIENCE DICTATES THE CONCLUSION THAT "ACCIDENT PRONE" INDIVIDUALS DO EXIST. THIS PAPER ATTEMPTS TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THESE TWO SOURCES OF DATA ARE NOT NECESSARILY CONTRADICTORY. IF ACCIDENT PRONENESS IS SEEN AS A SOMETIMES-PRESENT TRAIT IN SOME INDIVIDUALS AND MORE ENDURING IN OTHERS IT IS POSSIBLE TO EXPLAIN BOTH THE STATISTICAL DATA WHICH ARGUE AGAINST THE PHENOMENA AND CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS WHICH SUPPORT IT. /HSL/
