COMPARING COLLISION DRIVERS WITH THE DRIVING POPULATION-AT- RISK: A CHALLENGE TO CONVENTIONAL METHODS
DATA ARE TAKEN FROM THE GRAND RAPIDS STUDY WHICH INCLUDES INFORMATION ABOUT 9.353 DRIVERS INVOLVED IN COLLISIONS AND 8,008 DRIVERS SELECTED AT RANDOM FROM THE DRIVER POPULATION -AT-RISK AS A CONTROL GROUP. IT ILLUSTRATES THE NEED FOR A MEASURE OF EXPOSURE TO TRAFFIC HAZARDS IF BIOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DRIVERS ARE TO BE RELEVANT IN THE PREDICTION OF COLLISION INVOLVEMENT. NOT ONLY DOES THE REPRESENTATION OF BIOGRAPHICAL DRIVER CHARACTERISTICS IN THE POPULATION-AT-RISK DIFFER FROM THE DRIVER LICENSE FILES, BUT ALSO, THE REPRESENTATION OF THOSE DRIVER CHARACTERISTICS DIFFERS WIDELY OVER TIME OF DAY WITHIN THE POPULATION-AT-RISK. /AUTHOR/
