TRUCK SPRAY ON WET ROADS REDUCED BY NEW FENDER DESIGN

GUIDELINES WERE DEVELOPED FOR THE DESIGN OF FENDERS THAT REDUCED THE SPRAY AND MIST THROWN UP BY TRUCKS OPERATING ON WET PAVEMENTS. EXPERIMENTAL TESTS WERE DEVELOPED ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES: (1) FENDER WIDTH SHOULD BE ABOUT ONE AND ONE HALF TIMES THE TIRE SEPARATION WIDTH, (2) THE FENDER SHOULD EXTEND AS FAR REARWARD OF THE WHEEL AS PRACTICABLE, (3) THE REAR PART OF THE FENDER SHOULD EXTEND DOWN TO, BUT NOT LOWER THAN, ONE TIRE SECTION WIDTH FROM THE PAVEMENT, (4) THE SIDES OF THE FENDER SHOULD EXTEND DOWN TO THE TOP EDGE OF THE WHEEL RIM, (5) DRIP RAILS DEEP ENOUGH TO PREVENT OVER-FLOW SHOULD BE INSTALLED ON ALL EDGES OF THE FENDER TO DRAIN THE WATER AWAY, (6) TWO GAFFLES SHOULD BE LOCATED IN THE REAR SLOPING PART OF THE FENDER, (7) IF A SHORT FENDER LENGTH IS REQUIRED, THEN A VERTICAL FRONT COVER IS NEEDED TO PREVENT WATER FROM BEING PROJECTED FORWARD, (8) WITH TANDEM WHEELS, A RIGID SEPARATOR LOCATED BETWEEN THE WHEELS AND EXTENDING DOWN TO THE LEVEL OF THE LOSER EDGE OF THE WHEEL RIM IS REQUIRED, AND (9) FLEXIBLE FLAPS, WHICH EXTEND DOWN TO THE ROAD SURFACE, SHOULD BE INSTALLED AT THE REAR OF THE FENDER AND ALSO ON THE SEPARATOR. EXAMPLES ARE PICTURED OF SEVERAL FENDERS WITH VARIOUS TYPES OF TIRE TREAD. LABORATORY RESULTS WERE VERIFIED BY FIELD TESTS WITH A FULL-SIZE TRACTOR-SEMITRAILER.
