THE NORTH CAROLINA ROAD TEST TRUCK
IN THIS TEST TRUCK, THE GASOLINE MOTOR WAS REPLACED BY TWO ELECTRIC MOTORS WHICH WERE RUN FROM A GENERATOR CONNECTED TO A GASOLINE ENGINE MOUNTED AT THE REAR OF THE TRUCK BODY. WITH THIS RIG IT WAS POSSIBLE TO MEASURE THE POWER USED AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND UNDER VARIOUS OPERATING CONDITIONS. IF WAS FOUND THAT BY MEASURING THE POWER REQUIRED AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND BY CALCULATING THE TRACTIVE EFFORT USING THE EFFICIENCY OF THE MECHANICAL DRIVE OBTAINED BY LABORATORY CALIBRATION, THE TRACTIVE EFFORT COULD BE ANALYZED INTO THE THREE COMPONENTS, DISPLACEMENT RESISTANCE, AIR RESISTANCE AND IMPACT RESISTANCE. LITTLE DIFFERENCES IN POWER AND TRACTIVE EFFORT WERE FOUND FOR VARIOUS KINDS OF HARD SURFACED ROADS. OTHER THAN HARD SURFACED ROADS SHOWED GREAT DIFFERENCE, DEPENDING UPON THEIR CONDITION.
