BENDIX-WESTINGHOUSE DEVELOPING ANTI-SKID SYSTEM

A NEW NON-SKID BRAKING SYSTEM ANNOUNCED BY BENDIX- WESTINGHOUSE, CALLED ADAPTIVE BRAKING, AUTOMATICALLY ADAPTS TO VARIATION IN SURFACE CONDITIONS, STATIC OR DYNAMIC WHEEL LOADS, BRAKE EFFICIENCY, AND CONDITION OF TIRES. THE SYSTEM PREVENTS WHEEL LOCK UNDER ANY BRAKING CONDITIONS. IT WORKS BY INDIVIDUALLY CONTROLLING EACH WHEEL BRAKE OF THE VEHICLE TO PREVENT THE WHEEL FROM LOCKING AND SKIDDING. THE ELECTRONIC SYSTEM SENSES WHEN ANY WHEEL IS ABOUT TO LOCK UNDER BRAKING AND CONTROLS OR REGULATES THE BRAKING ACTION FOR EACH WHEEL. THE PRECISE BRAKING REGULATION PRODUCES THE HIGEST BRAKING EFFORT THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED ACCORDING TO THE CONDITIONS THAT EXIST AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT. IN DESIGNING THE SYSTEM, THE FOLLOWING MAJOR PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATINS WERE SET UP: (1) VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCE MUST BE EQUAL TO OR BETTER THAN STOPPING DISTANCE WITH LOCKED WHEELS ON ANY HARD SURFACE PAVEMENT WITH A COEFFICIENT BETWEEN 0.05 AND 1.0, (2) VEHICLE STABILITY AND STEERABILITY MUST BE EQUAL TO OR BETTER THAN FOR THE SAME VEHICLE WITHOUT AN ADAPTIVE BRAKING SYSTEM, (3) A VEHICLE WITH THE ADAPTIVE SYSTEM MUST BE COMPATIBLE IN COMBINATION WITH VEHICLES NOT SO EQUIPPED, AND PERFORMANCE MUST BE EQUAL TO OR BETTER THAN THE SAME COMBINATION WITHOUT THE SYSTEM ON ANY PART OF THE COMBINATION, (4) THE SYSTEM MUST NOT HAVE ANY ROUGHNESS OR FEELING OF LACK OF CONTROL THAT WOULD BE OBJECTIONABLE OR TROUBLESOME TO THE DRIVER, (5) BRAKING PERFORMANCE UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS WHERE WHEEL LOCK-UP IS NOT IMMINENT MUST NOT BE REDUCED, (6) THE SYSTEM MUST NOT REDUCE BRAKING POWER BELOW SAFE LIMITS, AND (7) THE SYSTEM MUST NOT REDUCE OR DEGRADE THE EMERGENCY OR PARKING BRAKE CAPABILITY OF THE VEHICLE. THE SYSTEM INCLUDES THREE MAJOR COMPONENTS: (1) A SPEED SENSOR MOUNTED INSIDE A WHEEL WHICH INSTANTANEOUSLY SENSES ANY CHANGE IN WHEEL SPEED AND SENDS A PROPORTIONAL ELECTRICAL SIGNAL TO A CONTROLLER, (2) A CONTROLLER, BASICALLY AN ELECTRONIC PACKAGE, THAT PROVIDES THE LOGIC TO DETERMINE WHEN ADJUSTMENT IN BRAKING FORCE IS NEEDED AND SENDS OUTPUT SIGNAL TO THE MODULATOR, AND (3) A MODULATOR, WHICH IS A VALVE MECHANISM, THAT ADJUSTS INDIVIDUAL WHEEL BRAKE-CHAMBER PRESSURE UP OR DOWN ACCORDING TO SIGNALS RECEIVED FROM THE CONTROLLER. ROAD TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON A SPECIALLY DESIGNED TEST TRACK.
