CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD ADOPTS TIGHT EMISSION STANDARDS FOR 1975 CARS SOLD IN CALIFORNIA

EXHAUST EMISSION STANDARDS ARE TIGHTENED FOR 1975 LIGHT VEHICLES SOLD NEW IN CALIFORNIA. TECHNOLOGICAL FEASIBILITY OF VARIOUS TECHNIQUES AND ALTERNATIVE ENGINES FOR ATTAINING THESE LOW EMISSION RATES IS EVALUATED. ALONG WITH RECOMMENDATIONS OF MORE STRICT STANDARDS FOR LIGHT-VEHICLE EXHAUST EMISSIONS, THE NEED IS POINTED OUT FOR STATEWIDE EFFORTS DIRECTED TOWARDS MORE STRINGENT CONTROL OVER ORGANIC COMPOUNDS AND NITROGEN OXIDES FROM SOURCES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES. ALTERNATIVE POWER PLANS AND FUELS ARE EVALUATED. AIR QUALITY STANDARDS ARE ADOPTED FOR CARBON MONOXIDE, NITROGEN OXIDES AND HYDROCARBONS. THE FOLLOWING TWO DEVICES DEMONSTRATED TO ELIMINATE EMISSIONS ARE DISCUSSED: THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD REACTOR, AND THE SYSTEM FOR RECIRCULATING THE EXHAUST GAS.
