DELAYS TO PEDESTRIANS CROSSING A ROAD
THE PEDESTRIAN'S DECISION PROCESSES IN USING SUBWAYS AND FOOTBRIDGES ARE DESCRIBED. CRITICAL ACCEPTANCE GAPS WERE CALCULATED BASED ON OBSERVATIONS OF PEDESTRIANS IN GROUPS, RATHER THAN INDIVIDUAL SITUATIONS. COMPUTER SIMULATION TECHNIQUES WERE USED TO DETERMINE AVERAGE PEDESTRIAN DELAYS. THE RESULTS SHOW RELATIONS BETWEEN THE CRITICAL ACCEPTANCE GAP, PEDESTRIAN VOLUME AND TRAFFIC VOLUME, AND SUGGEST THAT THE AVERAGE DELAY IS INSUFFICIENT TO PERSUADE PEDESTRIANS TO USE THE SUBWAY OR FOOTBRIDGE. IT IS PROPOSED THAT CONTINUOUS FOOTWAY SYSTEMS BE PROVIDED. /RRL/
