THE STABILITY OF ARTICULATED VEHICLES

INSTABILITY IN ARTICULATED VEHICLES AND THE CAUSE OF JACK-KNIFING AND OF TRAILER-SWING ARE DISCUSSED. WAYS IN WHICH THESE FORMS OF INSTABILITY CAN BE OVERCOME ARE DESCRIBED. THESE INCLUDE ANTI-LOCKING BRAKING SYSTEMS, LOAD SENSING BRAKE VALVES AND KING-PIN FRICTION DEVICES. THE PROBLEM OF VEHICLES OVERTURNING, IS ALSO DISCUSSED, TOGETHER WITH THE VARIOUS FACTORS THAT PARTICULARLY APPLY TO ARTICULATED VEHICLES, SUCH AS KING-PIN AND RUBBING PLATE WEAR, TRACTOR AND TRAILERS SUSPENSION STIFFNESS AND THE NATURAL FREQUENCY OF OSCILLATION OF THE TRACTOR-TRAILER UNIT. /RRL/
