INTERACTION OF VEHICLE AND ROAD SURFACE
AN ACCURATE SYNTHESIS OF THE INTERACTION OF AUTOMOBILE, THE HIGHWAY, AND THE DRIVER AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT IS CRITICALLY NEEDED. THE PROBLEM IS INCREASED WHERE MISMATCHES OCCUR: VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS CHANGE RAPIDLY AND ARE NOT ADAPTED TO ROAD CONDITIONS, DRIVER CAPABILITY VARIES WIDELY AND DOES NOT ALWAYS MEET VEHICLE AND HIGHWAY DEMANDS. EACH OF THE VARIABLES REQUIRED FOR FULL SIMULATION OF DRIVER/VEHICLE/ROAD INTERACTION IS DISCUSSED. THE DRIVER REQUIREMENTS ARE CONSIDERED FOR THE THREE MANEUVERS OF ACCELERATION, DECELERATION, AND CORNERING, BOTH SEPARATELY AND IN COMBINATION. VEHICLE FACTORS SUCH AS BRAKING SYSTEM, SUSPENSION SYSTEM, TIRES AMD MECHANISM OF TIRE-PAVEMENT INTERACTION, ARE CONSIDERED. INCLUSION OF FRICTION SPECIFICATIONS IN GEOMETRIC DESIGN STANDARDS MUST TAKE INTO ACCOUNT POTENTIAL PROBLEM AREAS-REDUCTION OF AVAILABLE FRICTION DUE TO LOAD SHIFTING, NONDESIGN MANEUVERS, AND VARIABLE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. THE PRINCIPAL DIFFICULTY IN SIMULATING THE TRIPARTATE SYSTEM IS NOT FOUND TO BE IN WRITING THE EQUATIONS, BUT IN REPRESENTING THE SUBSYSTEMS.
