ROADWAY ILLUMINATION AND VISIBILITY IN FOG
THIS ARTICLE REPORTS ON STUDIES MADE AT THE INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN VISION AT OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, USING MODEL- SCALE SIMULATION WITH MAN-MADE WATER DROPLET FOG. THE PHYSICAL DATA ON THE POLAR SCATTERING PROPERTIES OF FOG SUGGEST THAT SPECIAL DIRECTIONAL FIXED LIGHTING SYSTEMS WILL ALWAYS PROVE SUPERIOR TO CONVENTIONAL LIGHTING FOR USE IN FOG. VISIBILITY DISTANCES UNDER CONVENTIONAL FIXED LIGHTING SHOULD FALL BETWEEN VALUES REPORTED HERE FOR DIRECTIONAL FIXED LIGHTING SYSTEMS AND FOR VEHICULAR HEADLIGHTING. /AUTHOR/
