SEMI-DIRECTIONAL FIXED LIGHTING FOR ONE-WAY HIGHWAYS
THIS PAPER IS A PROGRESS REPORT COVERING SEVERAL STAGES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SEMI-DIRECTIONAL FIXED LIGHTING AIMED TOWARD PROVIDING DRIVER VISIBILITY, COMFORT, AND SAFETY. THE SEMI-DIRECTIONAL SYSTEM PROVIDES MORE UNIFORM OBSTACLE LUMINANCE; BETTER CONTRAST BETWEEN THE OBJECT AND BACKGROUND; GOOD SUBJECTIVE PAVEMENT LUMINANCE AND UNIFORMITY; NEGLIGIBLE DISABILITY VEILING BRIGHTNESS ON BOTH THE MAIN HIGHWAY AND ADJACENT AREAS AND SERVICE ROADS; A SAFE, 30-DEGREE WIDE LATERAL FIELD OF VIEW (200 FEET AHEAD) FROM ANYWHERE ON THE DRIVING LANES; AND A MINIMUM OF DISCOMFORT GLARE WHILE OPTICAL GUIDANCE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED FOR THE DRIVER'S USE. THESE BENEFITS ARE AVAILABLE AT A LONGITUDINAL SPACING TO MOUNTING HEIGHT RATIO OF UP TO 5 TO 1 FROM AN ESTHETICALLY PLEASING LUMINAIRE. /AUTHOR/
