STUDIES OF MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATION ON LIGHTED AND UNLIGHTED RURAL HIGHWAYS IN NEW JERSEY
THE EFFECTS OF HIGHWAY LIGHTING ON THE MOVEMENT OF VEHICLES OVER 2-LANE, 3-LANE, AND WIDER RURAL HIGHWAYS ARE STUDIED. RESULTS SHOWED (1) HIGHWAY LIGHTING DOES NOT AFFECT TRAVEL SPEEDS; (2) CERTAIN NIGHT DRIVING PRACTICES WHICH TEND TO CAUSE ACCIDENTS ARE MEASURABLY REDUCED BY PROVIDING HIGHWAY ILLUNINATION; (3) MORE RESEARCH IS REQUIRED TO DEVELOP A DEVICE THAT WILL MEASURE SOME FACTOR THAT IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO A DRIVER'S NERVOUS TENSION AND TO ESTABLISH A RELIABLE CORRELATION THAT CAN BE USED IN EVALUATING THE MORE INTANGIBLE BENEFITS DERIVED FROM HIGHWAY LIGHTING. /AUTHOR/
