THE TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT PROBLEMS IN BOMBAY METROPOLITAN AREA ARE DISCUSSED, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO TRAVEL PATTERNS, GROWTH OF POPULATION, GROWTH OF MOTOR VEHICLES, MASS TRANSPORTATION (ROAD AND RAIL), PARKING FACILITIES, TRAFFIC CONTROL ACCIDENTS AND HIGHWAY PLANNING AND FINANCING. THE NEED FOR A TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT AUTHORITY FOR BOMBAY METROPOLITAN AREA IS IDENTIFIED, AND A SUMMARY OF THE FUNCTIONS OF SUCH AN AUTHORITY IS GIVEN, THE MOST IMPORTANT OF WHICH IS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PROGRAMMES AND POLICIES, AND THE PLANNED AND CO-ORDINATED DEVELOPMENT OF TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES.
