THE MERGING AND WEAVING OF TRAFFIC STREAMS AT MULTI-LEVEL JUNCTIONS

THE ARTICLE SUMMARIZES THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT ENTITLED "ELEMENTS OF TRAFFIC FLOW AT GRADE-SEPARATED ROAD JUNCTIONS", AND PROVIDES DATA WHICH MAY BE USED IN THE DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF ROAD SAFETY AT MOTORWAY ACCESS AND EXIT POINTS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF TRAFFIC ON THE DRIVING AND OVERTAKING LANE NEAR ACCESS ROADS AND EXITS AND OF THE SIZE OF THE GAP NEEDED IN ORDER FOR VEHICLES TO BE ABLE TO MERGE WITH THE MAIN TRAFFIC STREAM SAFELY. THE GAP REQUIRED DIMINISHES SIGNIFICANTLY THE GREATER THE SPEED OF THE MERGING VEHICLE, WHEREAS THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE IN THE MAIN STREAM ONLY SLIGHTLY AFFECTS THE SIZE OF THE GAP. /TRRL/
