OXFORD STREET EXPERIMENTAL TRAFFIC SCHEME
OXFORD STREET, LONDON'S MOST POPULAR SHOPPING STREET, IS, IN TERMS OF PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENTS PER MILE OF ROAD, THE MOST DANGEROUS ROAD IN BRITAIN. IT CARRIES UP TO 3,000 VEH/H INCLUDING NEARLY 400 BUSES WHICH OFTEN SUFFERED UNPREDICTABLE AND SOMETIMES ENORMOUS DELAYS. THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE OBJECTIVES AND SOME OF THE DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED IN THE DESIGN OF AN EXPERIMENTAL BUS-LANE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCHEME FOR THE THOROUGHFARE.(A)
