BUS PRIORITIES AT TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNALS
AN EXPERIMENT WAS UNDERTAKEN AT LEICESTER TO EXAMINE HOW BUS DELAYS IN MIXED TRAFFIC FLOWS COULD BE REDUCED AT TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS BY INTRODUCING SELECTIVE VEHICLE DETECTION EQUIPMENT TO GIVE BUSES PRIORITY. THE EXPERIMENT SHOWED THAT THIS TYPE OF EQUIPMENT COULD BE USED SUCCESSFULLY TO DETECT THE PRESENCE OF BUSES, REDUCE THEIR DELAY TIME AND ENABLE THEM TO ACHIEVE A MORE CONSISTENT JOURNEY TIME THROUGH THE JUNCTION. TO CONFIRM THESE FINDINGS AND TO DEVELOP THE CRITERIA FURTHER, A SECOND EXPERIMENT COMMENCED AT DERBY IN JUNE 1972. (A)
