IMPROVED TRAFFIC FLOW BY MEANS OF AUTOMATION
The tasks of regulating and improving traffic flow and controlling stationary traffic by automatic control at urban road junctions are studied. Vehicle-actuated selection of programs for the control of traffic lights has been supplemented in Munich by the principle of vehicle-actuated distribution of green time. With this method, the green times within coordinated signal programs selected by vehicle actuation are adapted according to the prevailing traffic conditions at each junction. The advantage in terms of traffic flow has been calculated at 20 percent. A park guidance system with full electronic control to remove congestion caused by vehicles in search of a parking area is also described. /TRRL/
