A DIAGRAM SHOWING PRACTICABLE SETTINGS FOR A FIXED-TIME TRAFFIC SIGNAL AND THEIR EFFECT ON DELAY

IN CALCULATING SETTINGS FOR FIXED-TIME TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT A ROAD JUNCTION IT IS NECESSARY THAT EACH TRAFFIC STREAM SHOULD HAVE RIGHT OF WAY FOR LONG ENOUGH TO ALLOW ALL APPROACHING TRAFFIC TO PASS THROUGH THE JUNCTION IN THE LONG RUN. IN ADDITION, A MAXIMUM IS USUALLY IMPOSED ON THE CYCLE TIME, AND MINIMA ON THE GREEN TIMES. THIS PAPER SHOWS HOW IF THE SIGNAL CYCLE HAS ONLY TWO STAGES, ALL POSSIBLE SIGNAL SETTINGS CAN BE REPRESENTED BY THE POINTS OF AN EQUILATERAL TRIANBLE, AND SETTINGS SATISFYING THE ABOVE CONDITIONS ARE REPRESENTED BY POINTS IN A PART OF THE TRIANGLE BOUNDED BY STRAINGHT LINES. WITHIN THIS PART OF THE TRIANGLE, THE VARIATION WITH THTE SIGNAL SETTINGS OF THE ESTIMATED DELAY PER UNIT TIME AT THE JUNCTION CAN BE ILLUSTRATED BY DRAWING CONTOURS OF EQUAL DELAY. TWO EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN. (A).
