COMMUNICATION SYSTEM IMPROVES PASSENGER SERVICE

SAN DIEGO TRANSIT HAS BEEN USING A NEW COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM, METROCOM, SINCE JUNE 1972. THE SYSTEM EMPLOYS TWO WAY RADIOS, A LOGICS SYSTEM WHICH FURNISHES AUTOMATIC BUS IDENTIFICATION AND DIGITAL COMMUNICATION ON AN INDIVIDUAL BUS BASIS, A SILENT EMERGENCY ALARM AND A MECHANICAL ALARM FOR BASIC MALFUNCTIONS. IT HAS MET WITH SUCCESS BECAUSE IT GIVES MANAGEMENT TOTAL AND DIRECT SERVICE WITH ALL DRIVERS IN SERVICE, FACILITATES PROMPT SERVICE AND IT LIGHTENS THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DRIVER. THE SYSTEM HAS NOT ONLY HAD A FAVORABLE RESPONSE FROM BUS RIDERS AND BUS MANAGEMENT BUT IS ALSO BEING CONSIDERED FOR USE IN OTHER CITIES.
