PAPER 6 USER ASPECTS PART 3 MOTORWAY SERVICE AREAS
THE MOTORWAY USERS' NEEDS THAT HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED ARE LISTED. THE FIRST SERVICE AREAS HAD TO RELY ON KNOW-HOW IN OTHER CATERING SITUATIONS, BUT NOW NEW IDEAS HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED AS A RESULT OF OPERATIONAL EXPERIENCE. THE PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATION FOR NEW CONTRACTS AND THE DEVELOPERS' RESPONSIBILITIES ARE DESCRIBED. THE DIFFICULTIES IN MAINTAINING A 24-HOUR SERVICE AND IN OVERCOMING MISUSE OF FACILITIES ARE OUTLINED. THE NEED FOR COMPETITION AND CONTROL TO MAINTAIN A HIGH STANDARD IS EMPHASISED. THE SPACING OF SERVICE AREAS IS DISCUSSED. FINALLY, COMPARISON IS MADE WITH THE USA AND OTHER PARTS OF EUROPE. A SEPARATE DISCUSSION OF THIS PAPER IS PRESENTED.
