VEHICLE RESPONSIVE SIGNAL SYSTEMS FOUND WANTING
IN GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, THE VEHICLE-ACTUATED FLEXIBLE PROGRESSIVE SYSTEM HAS BEEN TESTED IN THE EVENING, WHEN FLOW WAS APPROXIMATELY HALF THE DAYTIME VALUE, AND COMPLETELY ISOLATED VEHICLE ACTUATION HAS BEEN TESTED IN THE EARLY MORNING, WHEN FLOW WAS VERY LIGHT. IN EACH CASE THE PERFORMANCE WAS COMPARED WITH THAT OF AN OPTIMIZED FIXED-TIME PLAN. DURING THE EVENING JOURNEY TIMES WERE 13 PERCENT LONGER WITH THE VEHICLE-RESPONSIVE SYSTEM THAN WITH THE BASIC FIXED-TIME LINKING. EARLY MORNING JOURNEY TIMES WERE THE SAME WITH THE OPTIMIZED FIXED-TIME SYSTEM AS WITH ISOLATED VEHICLE-ACTUATED SIGNALS. A TRIAL CARRIED OUT IN WEST LONDON SHOWED THAT A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT VERSION OF THE VEHICLE-ACTUATED FLEXIBLE PROGRESSIVE SYSTEM ALSO GAVE NO SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN JOURNEY TIME OVER THE BASIC FIXED-TIME LINKING DURING THE EVENING.
