PENNDOT CUTS RUMBLE STRIPS INTO PAVEMENTS
DIAMOND-GROOVED "CUT-IN" RUMBLE STRIPS APPEAR TO BE A HIGHLY PROMISING METHOD OF IMPROVING ROAD SAFETY. THE SPACING AND CUTTING OF RUMBLE STRIPS INTO ASPHALT AND ASPHALT AND CONCRETE PAVEMENTS ARE DISCUSSED. VARIOUS FACTORS WILL BE EVALUATED, INCLUDING THE STRAIGHT VERSUS THE TAPERED EDGE, THE DEGREE TO WHICH THE STRIPS AUDIBLY AND MECHANICALLY ALERT DRIVERS TO POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS AREAS AND CONDITIONS, THE SUPERIORITY OF THE SLOTTED STRIPS TO CONVENTIONAL RAISED ASPHALT STRIPS, AND THE CLAIM THAT THE SLOTTED STRIPS OFFER BETTER WATER DRAINAGE.
