AN ANALYSIS OF INTERCHANGE OPERATION IN AN URBAN AUTOMATED HIGHWAY NETWORK

IN ORDER TO SERVE THE DIVERSE TRAVEL DEMANDS IN LARGE URBAN AREAS, AUTOMATED HIGHWAY NETWORKS WILL HAVE TO CONTAIN AUTOMATED HIGHWAY INTERCHANGES. THIS PAPER DEVELOPS A METHODOLOGY FOR ANALYZING INTERCHANGE OPERATION UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE NETWORK IS OPERATED ACCORDING TO A "CYCLE PREPROGRAMMING" STRATEGY. THE EFFECTS OF PHYSICAL INTERCHANGE DIMENSIONS, VEHICLE PERFORMANCE LIMITATIONS, AND SYSTEM CONTROL LIMITATIONS ON THE VALUE OF A PARAMETER DIRECTLY RELATED TO EFFECTIVE NETWORK CAPACITY ARE EXAMINED FOR AN INTERCHANGE CONFIGURATION SIMILAR TO THAT USED IN PRESENT FREEWAY NETWORKS. A METHOD FOR INCREASING THE VALUE OF THIS PARAMETER AND THEREBY INCREASING EFFECTIVE NETWORK CAPACITY IS INVESTIGATED. /AUTHOR/
