SPRING TO BRING NEW YORK "DE-MOTORIZED ZONE"
DURING MARCH, APRIL, AND MAY, 1973, MADISON AVENUE IN NEW YORK CITY WILL BECOME A MALL BETWEEN 44TH AND 57TH STREETS. THE TEST IS EXPECTED TO RESULT IN A PERMANENT MALL. A TWO- LANE CENTER CORRIDOR WILL BE PROVIDED FOR BUSES, EMERGENCY VEHICLES, AND DELIVERY TRUCKS ONLY, WITH DELIVERIES BANNED FROM NOON TO 2 PM. SIDEWALKS WILL BE WIDENED FROM 13 FEET TO 29 FEET BY TAKING 16 FEET FROM THE STREET. A SHOPPER BUS LOOP WILL EMPLOY HEADWAYS AS SHORT AS 5 MINUTES AND MAKE ALL-DAY FARES AVAILABLE. COSTS, TRAFFIC REROUTING, MINIBUSES, AND BUS STOPS ARE DISCUSSED.
