INFLUENCE OF SPEED LIMITS ON DRIVING BEHAVIOR IN AUSTRIA

LIMITS OF 80 AND 100 KM/HR, RESPECTIVELY, WERE POSTED FOR DIFFERENT GROUPS OF DRIVERS ON THE SAME MULTI-LANE HIGHWAY. CORRESPONDING TO THESE TWO EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS, TWO CONTROL GROUPS WERE FREE OF SPEED RESTRICTION. VEHICLE SPEED WAS MEASURED FIRST AT A POINT 1.5 KM BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF THE SPEED LIMIT ZONE AND AGAIN AT A POINT WELL WITHIN IT. RESULTS SHOW DEFINITE SPEED REDUCTIONS FOR BOTH EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS, WHILE THE CONTROL GROUPS CONTINUED AT ABOUT THEIR ORIGINAL SPEEDS. EVEN THE REDUCED SPEED, HOWEVER, EXCEEDED THE LIMIT FOR THE 80 KM/HR GROUP. THE OTHER EXPERIMENTAL GROUP SLOWED DOWN TO APPROXIMATE CLOSELY ITS 100 KM/HR LIMIT. NO CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE SHOWED GREATER INFLUENCE OF SPEED LIMITS ON EITHER DAY OR NIGHT DRIVING. INITIAL SPEED, HOWEVER, WAS ALWAYS HIGHER DURING DAYTIME. /SRIS/ (BL)
