HIGHER SPEED LIMITS FOR TRUCKS?
THE OHIO STATE HIGHWAY PATROL CONDUCTED A STUDY TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF INCREASING THE SPEED LIMIT OF TRUCKS ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS. EVIDENCE REVEALED THAT AN INCREASE IN THE SPEED LIMIT OF TRUCKS WOULD DRASTICALLY INCREASE CRASH INJURIES, FATALITIES AND TRUCK-RELATED ACCIDENTS. THESE CONCLUSIONS ARE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING OBSERVATIONS: HIGHER SPEED WILL ENCOURAGE COMPANIES AND DRIVERS TO COVER GREATER DISTANCES AND SO WILL INCREASE DRIVER FATIGUE; STOPPING DISTANCES WILL INCREASE; BLAST EFFECTS (AIR TURBULENCE AROUND LARGE TRUCKS WHICH AFFECTS THE STABILITY OF SMALL VEHICLES PASSING OR BEING PASSED) WILL INCREASE IN SEVERITY.
