PUBLIC INFORMATION PROBLEMS IN URBAN INTERSTATE OPERATION
DRIVER INFORMATION PROGRAMS ARE GENERALLY OF THREE TYPES: ON-THE-SPOT ADVICE OF TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND ALTERNATIVE ROUTES, PUBLIC RELATIONS CAMPAIGNS IN CONNECTION WITH EXTENSIVE OR PROLONGED MAINTENANCE, AND AREAWIDE COVERAGE AND COMMUNICATIONS. THE LATTER TWO ARE DISCUSSED ON THE BASIS GAINED FROM CHICAGO EXPRESSWAYS SINCE 1966. PROGRAM ELEMENTS ARE OUTLINED, AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS MEASURES IS DISCUSSED.
