THE URBAN TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM AS A RESEARCH TOOL
A COMPUTER TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM WHICH WILL ENABLE THE FEDERAL HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO CONDUCT EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH IN TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL TECHNIQUES IS BEING INSTALLED IN A PORTION OF WASHINGTON, D. C. THIS SYSTEM, KNOWN AS THE URBAN TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM/BUS PRIORITY SYSTEM (UTCS/BPS) WILL CONTROL THE SIGNALS AT 111 INTERSECTIONS. EXPERIMENTS AND RESEARCH WILL BE CONDUCTED ON TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL STRATEGIES, SIGNAL PRIORITIES FOR BUSES, THE USE OF DISPLAYS AND CONTROLS BY THE OPERATOR, AND THE CALCULATION OF TRAFFIC PARAMETERS AND MEASURES OF EFFECTIVENESS. /AUTHOR/
