Truck tolling system interoperability between Switzerland and Austria
Switzerland has introduced a heavy vehicles fee already in 2001. For Swiss vehicles the use of onboard units is mandatory. In the Austrian motorway network truck tolling system introduced on January 1st 2004 the use of an onboard unit is mandatory. The Swiss and the Austrian fee collection systems have managed to set up interoperability despite having different charging concepts and different means of fee collection. Technical interoperability rests on the common use of the CEN standard DSRC. Also for procedural and contractual matters, workable practical solutions have been found.
