How to build an open and secure multi-service provider electronic payment system
In 1997, Hong Kong with its Octopus card has pioneered the achievement of a multimodal and multioperator contactless smart travel card. It has now become an electronic purse. Other areas in the world have had the ambition to build such a system for more than 10 years: the Netherlands, Oslo, San Francisco. Some made a first try and failed, some have waited. The public transport operators needed to become more mature to build such a multi-operator project and to trust the technology, especially for data protection and revenue apportionment.
